Watch Out!!

A holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said, "Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like."

The Lord led the holy man to two doors. He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew which smelled delicious and made the holy man’s mouth water. The people sitting around the tableware thin and sickly. They appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful, but because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering. The Lord said, ‘You have seen Hell.’

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which made the holy man’s mouth water. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, ‘I don’t understand.’ It is simple’ said the Lord, ‘it requires but one skill. You see, they have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of themselves.’

When Jesus died on the cross he was thinking of you!

Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.

Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of love,
Make our world an Eden
Like the Heaven above.

Helping Those Who “Just Don’t Get It”

You’re frustrated. You’ve come at it from every angle imaginable. Yet the lost person you are speaking to still does not understand that eternal life is a gift. It is free. Groaning, you feel like saying, “You just don’t get it, do you?” So what do you do?

Let’s start with what you don’t do. First, don’t take God’s responsibility on your shoulders. The lost person you’re talking to isn’t suffering from poor spiritual eyesight. She is blinded. Second Corinthians 4:4 reminds us, “whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”

Don’t call yourself a failure in evangelism. That’s what Satan wants you to do. If you listen to him, that person may become the last person you attempt to evangelize. God holds you responsible to sow seed, not save souls. Sharing the gospel is your job. Converting the lost is His. Scripture emphasizes being faithful, not fruitful. Do your part and leave God’s part up to Him.

Thirdly, keep praying for that person and move on to talk to the next one God brings across your path. The one who doesn’t “get it” is one lost person but he’s not the only lost person.

Now what do you do? Prayer is your first resort, not your last one. Ask God to dispel the unbeliever’s spiritual blindness. When the Holy Spirit enables a person to understand, he or she often says “I just got it. You’re saying it’s free. That’s why I couldn’t see it. It’s too simple.”

Also, ask God to send someone in addition to you. Sometimes the good news has to be heard by another voice. A pastor was considering changing churches. After nearly 20 years in the same pulpit, he thought it was time for another voice. He said, “My people have heard me so often, they are listening but I don’t think they’re hearing.” That’s the situation with some lost people. They are listening but your voice becomes so common they aren’t hearing. A different person might be what God uses.

Another suggestion is to use John 19:30. Upon the cross Christ declared, “It is finished.” Ask the lost person, “Tell me what that means to you.” Many have never contemplated that verse. A professional athlete I had the privilege of leading to Christ came from a religious background. He said, “If anything I did got me to heaven, Jesus couldn’t have said ‘It is finished,’ could He?” He suddenly saw that when Christ died on the cross, He made the full payment for our sins, not the down payment.

Keep being faithful. Who knows? It might take the person you’re concerned about 20 years to “get it.” The next one might see it in the first 20 minutes of your conversation. Don’t get discouraged. Get dependent C on God, prayer and the Holy Spirit.
